FurMetric Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 August 2026
The short version. FurMetric has no accounts and no adverts. We don't know who you are, and we don't want to.
Your scan history, your pets, their allergy flags, your feeding log and your reaction journal all stay on your phone. We never receive them.
What we do receive is the barcodes you scan, and — only when you choose to add a missing product — photographs of that product's packaging. Those photographs are read once and never stored.
No account, no sign-up
FurMetric doesn't ask you to register. There is no username, no password, no email address and no profile. Because of that, we have no way to connect anything described below to you as a person.
What stays on your phone
The following is stored only in the app's own storage on your device. It is never transmitted to us, and we cannot see it:
- Your scan history
- Your pets, including their names and any allergy flags you set
- Your feeding log
- Your reaction journal
- Your first name, if you choose to give one during setup
Because this data lives only on your device, deleting the app deletes it permanently. There is no backup and we cannot restore it for you.
What we receive
- Barcodes you scan. Sent to our servers so we can look up the product and return its score.
- Photographs of product packaging, and only when you use the "Add a Product" feature to contribute a product we don't have yet. See the next section.
- Product details you confirm when contributing — the product name, brand, ingredient list and the nutrition panel from the label.
- An anonymous notification token, paired with the barcodes in your history, but only if you allow notifications. This exists so that a recall alert reaches the people who actually scanned the recalled product, instead of being broadcast to everybody. It carries no name, email or account.
- Your device's Region setting — the country your phone is set to, the same setting that decides your date and currency format. We use it to suggest products actually sold where you are. This is not GPS and not your location; we never ask for location permission.
Photographs are read, not kept
When you photograph a product to add it, the images are sent to our servers and passed to an AI service that reads the text on the label. The extracted text comes back to your phone for you to check and correct. The photographs themselves are never saved — not in our database, not in file storage, nowhere. Only the text you confirm is kept.
Please photograph the packaging only. There is no reason for a person, a face or your surroundings to be in these pictures.
Products you add become part of the shared catalogue
FurMetric's value comes from its product database, and contributions from people using the app are how it grows. When you add a product, the product information you confirm — name, brand, ingredients, nutrition values — becomes part of the catalogue that every other user can see, along with the score generated from it.
This is product information, not personal information. Nothing identifies you as the contributor, because we have no identity for you in the first place.
Who else is involved
We use a small number of services to run the app. They handle data on our behalf:
- Supabase — hosts our database and the server code that scores products.
- Anthropic — the AI that reads label photographs and analyses ingredient lists.
- Expo, together with Apple and Google — deliver push notifications for recall alerts, if you've allowed them.
- Apple and Google — distribute the app itself, and provide us with the anonymous, aggregate install and crash statistics that every developer receives.
What we don't do
- No adverts, and no advertising identifiers
- No analytics or behaviour-tracking software of any kind
- No selling or renting of data to anyone
- No location tracking
- No access to your contacts, photo library, microphone or health data
- No paid or sponsored placement — a brand cannot buy a better score or a recommendation
Children
FurMetric is intended for adults buying food for their pets. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
- Delete everything we hold on your device by clearing your history in the app, or by deleting the app.
- Turn off notifications in your phone's settings at any time; the anonymous token stops being used.
- Contributed product data cannot be individually withdrawn, because it isn't linked to you and has become part of the shared catalogue. If you believe a product entry is wrong, please contact us and we'll correct or remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what the app collects, we'll update this page and change the date at the top before the change ships, not after.
